Prof Andries J JordaanAndries Jordaan is registered as a professional natural scientist (PrSciNat) and as professional disaster manager (PrDM). He holds a PhD in agricultural economics with a focus on drought risk assessment. He distinguished himself as an expert with multi and trans-disciplinary expertise in agricultural & rural development, and disaster risk & vulnerability assessment.

He is a leading scientist on disaster and disaster risks in Africa. Andries was the Director of the Disaster Management Training and Education Centre (DiMTEC) at the University of the Free State from 2015 to 2018. Under his leadership DiMTEC is today regarded as the largest post graduate centre in disaster risk science in Africa with a representative footprint from 17 African countries. More than 80 Master students and 9 PhD’s from all over Africa already qualified under his mentorship. He is currently also a research fellow at the University of the Free State.

Prof Jordaan has practical experience with drought risk assessments and implementation of drought risk reduction strategies as an agricultural extension officer and as an entrepreneur. He has 23 years experience as a commercial farmer in the Eastern Free State and was also an entrepreneur with 10 year experience in agri business management.

As a scientists he manages to bridge the gap between scientific theory and implementation. He completed research projects and consultancies in more than fourteen African countries, either as an independent consultant or in a multi disciplinary research team.
